You read that right: Pumpkin Maple Bacon Dog Treats. (Try saying that three times fast.)
You see, our two sons aren’t the only “children” in the house.
And there’s Winn.
I’m thinking about dogs this week because this Friday’s At Home with Martin & Sylvia story is called “Dog Show”. In the story, Martin and Sylvia encounter all sorts of dogs: big, little, fluffy, short – dogs that jump high, dogs that jump long, racing dogs and hunting dogs. And then of course, there’s their good dog Bill-Bill who they discover is a “snuggling dog”!
So that our canine friends have a little Halloween goodie of their own, I decided to try my hand at dog treats. And my concoction: a simple flour and oat based biscuit that combines pumpkin and bacon fat!
Here’s the recipe!
Pumpkin Maple Bacon Dog Treats
1 1/2 cups wheat flour
1/2 cups rolled oats
2 tablespoons fresh parsley, minced (or 1 tbl dried)
1/2 cup cooked or canned pumpkin
1/2 cup melted bacon fat (or butter)
1 tablespoon maple syrup
2 tablespoons water
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
In a large bowl, combine the flour, rolled oats and parsley. In a saucepan, melt the bacon fat (or butter) over low heat. When completely liquid, whisk in the egg , maple syrup and pumpkin. Add the liquid ingredients to the dry ingredients and combine well. Add water as needed to make a moist dough.
Drop spoonfuls of the dough onto a parchment-lined baking sheet. Press flat with a glass bottom. (Dip the glass bottom in water between ever 3-4 presses so the glass won’t sick.) Bake for 15-20 minutes.
And once they’ve cooled, share with your furry friends.
