Big energy — whether it's happy or sad, angry or excited — can be overwhelming for both the child and their grown-up. The key is to focus big energy and allow it to run its course in a productive way. Some of the best ways we've found to funnel that energy are to get outside and get active. Below are some of our best suggestions from the Sparkle blog to help your family.
Soda Bottle Rocket
This activity is great for big energy. Send that explosive energy sky-high with these soda bottle rockets. Within one or two launches, your kiddos should feel back to their normal selves.
Daddy's Pollination Game
This game is great for focusing while also moving around. Your little bees will need to focus their energy on finding the pollination stations and moving around to each one.
Take a Night Walk
For those littles who have trouble winding down at night — and who often get wound up instead — taking a night walk may be just the thing to relax. Walk with them and talk about how all the daytime animals are getting ready for bed. The quiet of the evening and the fresh air will help them calm down, too. Plus a little extra walk at the end of the day can release that final bit of energy.
Hidden Earth Art
Here is another game that will create focus while moving. The object is to take a walk and create art from natural materials that will give someone else who passes by a delightful surprise.
Looking for animal tracks can easily turn a frown upside down. Finding animal tracks is a great way to start a story. It makes you ask, "What is it? Where did it come from and where is it going?" Can you follow the tracks to their end? Maybe you'll find the animals den or nest.
A Neighborhood Scavenger Hunt
This is a great one for big, excited energy. It takes some advance planning but it can be lots of fun too.
Pool Noodle Sprinkler
This one is both a craft and a game! When my kids are feeling very grumpy or their energy is not the best, I find that water does the trick. In warmer areas or once it's summer, this pool noodle sprinkler is a really great way to get out that energy, move around, and have some laughs.
This game is for really big energy! It's an outdoor game that requires lots of participants and lots of running around and laughing.
Indoor Obstacle Course
Finally, we have an indoor option for times when the weather is just plain yucky or you can't go outside for another reason. Making an obstacle course inside the house can change the energy very quickly and make for a long afternoon of fun!
