Sparkle Weekly Wonderings: On Costumes
We take costumes seriously around here. Currently in our youngest son’s closet, there are three trunks of costumes ready to be rifled through and spread around the room.
Though it is the Halloween season, I feel the need to be clear: we use these costumes all year long. Whether for casual theatrical productions, spontaneous birthday movies, or because the party invitations didn’t specify which dress would be most appropriate, we always look for excuses to bust out the trunks.
The history of Halloween and Day of the Dead have some spooky reasons for putting on costumes. Back in the day, there was fear that the dead had a unique opportunity to “get back” at us during the spiritually vulnerable times of late October and early November. To remain hidden from the potentially angry deceased, people wore costumes and masks.
