Micro-Play: Simple Ways to Sprinkle Fun Into Your Days

As a parent, you’ve got your hands full — the laundry, the work deadline, and the need to prep dinner are all calling to you. At the same time, you want to experience playful connection with your kids, but the idea of a big project (and the ensuing clean-up) feels overwhelming. But isn’t there another way?

Here’s the good news: playtime doesn’t always have to require a big setup, a mess, or a hefty block of free time. All play requires is a shift in energy for a moment when kids can step aside from whatever they’re doing and focus their energy on something new and engaging — something with minimum prep and maximum delight.

So here are five quick, set-up-free ways to drop two minutes of play into your week!

1. Turn Chores Into a High-Stakes Race

News flash: Sometimes kids aren’t 100% receptive to taking directions because, you know, they’re kids. A fun trick to keep them engaged and get them to those chores they’re not always excited to do is make a game out of it. Instead of the third reminder to put their toys away, pick up their room or put their shoes on, set a time on your phone or give a dramatic 20 second countdown.

“I bet you can’t get both of your shoes tied before I finish counting backward from twenty. Go!”

The pivot from chore to fun challenge can shift the energy and add a moment of delight for children. If you’re looking for more ideas, check-out our post for 6 Ways to (Truly!) Make Cleaning Fun — and while you’re at it, you can listen to this collection: Clean Up Time

2. The “Very Serious” Staring Contest

Waiting in at the doctor’s office? Standing in line at the library? We’ve got a quick game for you. Position yourself so you’re eye to eye with your child and declare a staring contest with one important rule: both of you MUST maintain a extremely serious, almost angry-looking face. Then see how long it takes from one or both of you to break down laughing. Trying not to laugh while holding an intense and dramatic facial expression is a tough challenge — and it usually devolves into laughter in under fifteen seconds. If either of you can stay focused for longer, those are some serious bragging rights!

3. Play “The Floor Is Lava” Across One Room

Transitions can be hard, especially toward something routine like “getting ready for bed.” But you can shift the mood with an all-time classic: “The Floor is Lava.” Let’s say you need your child or children to walk from the kitchen to their bedroom to put on pajamas. Suddenly, you shout out “The floor is molten lava, starting… NOW!!!” They now have ten seconds to get to their bed using only throw pillows or rug islands for safety. It’s a fun, quick game that’s over and done before anyone gets overwhelmed. And now they are in the right place to put on those jammies!

4. Do the “Freeze Frame” Rule

Freeze Frame brings an element of play at any time. The rules are simple: somebody yells “FREEZE!” and everyone in the house has to stop whatever their doing instantly and freeze in whatever posture they’re in, no matter how ridiculous. Whether it’s holding a fork halfway to their mouth, standing on one foot, or speaking in mid-sentence, they have to hold it until somebody breaks character.

Small, microscopic moments of play like these remind our kids (and us!) that warmth and humor don’t require an hour of free time—just a willingness to be silly for two minutes.

5. The “Password Required” Entrance

An element of whimsy can liven up an ordinary afternoon. Try this one: as your child attempts to walk into a room, block the door with your arm like a security guard and inform them that entrance requires that they whisper a secret password, do a ridiculous five-second dance, or make a specific animal sound. “State your business and quack like a duck.”

As you can see, playing fun, in-the-moment games doesn’t have to include any setup or pre-planning. Just a quick idea on your part can inspire your children’s natural inclination towards playfulness and imagination.

And sometimes the most ridiculous two-minute ideas turn out to be the ones they remember most.
This week, give yourself permission to keep it simple and leave the set-up out of it — and see where those silly moments can take you.
