This week's theme is : "Stories for the Sensitive Child"
Leo the Hermit Crab (from the Sparkle Sleepytime series)
“Leo the Hermit Crab” is from the Sparkle Sleepytime Series. It is about a young crab who needs a bigger shell. He feels cramped, uncomfortable and vulnerable in his current shell, but has to wait until a more appropriate shell is available. When the thin, small shell finally breaks, and he is temporarily without any shell at all, his parents are determined to get him what he needs. This story is for children who have a sensitive sense of touch and often feel uncomfortable in clothes and in their environment.
The Crystal Gnome (from the So Many Fairies series)
The Crystal gnome is happy in his tiny workshop underground. But he is also curious about the soft muffled sounds he hears from above: car motors, dogs barking, and the most interesting sound of all — children singing. When his curiosity is satisfied through a series of accidents, the delicate gnome is unexpectedly overwhelmed by the bright lights and loud sounds of the world above ground. With the help of his own crystal and some other experienced gnomes, he learns how to make a home among the sights and sounds that intrigue him.
Newberry (from the Stories for Overwhlem Collection)
This story features a little mouse named Newberry who is celebrating his second birthday. Although Newberry's friends and family are excited about the spectacular birthday event they have planned, the little mouse prefers things that are small, quiet and slow. Luckily, one of the Junkyard friends notices this and creates something special that matches Newberry's speed.
The Dark (from the Martin & Sylvia series)
It’s autumn: the days are getting shorter, and the dark comes earlier. Martin is feeling nervous. He can’t see as well at night, and he worries about shadows and things he can’t see. All of it makes it difficult for him to go to sleep at bedtime. Momma encourages him to use his other senses, and guides him through a hearing, smelling and feeling exercise that not only reassures him, but relaxes him enough to fall deeply asleep.
Minka the Tasmanian Devil (from the Sparkle Sleepytime series)
Minka is a Tasmanian Devil pup with a very sensitive body. Lights are too bright. Sounds are too loud. Touches are too rough and though her brothers and sister have all left their mother's pouch, Minka prefers to stay there. That is, until she gets too big and has to leave. Luckily, however, Minka's mother also has a sensitive body and knows the challenges - and benefits - that it can bring.
