Sparkle Crafts: Dragon's Roar Megaphone

In the By Thistle By Thimble story “The Dragon and The Unicorn,” there was once a land far to the north that was held in healthy balance by a dragon and a unicorn. When the people of that land tried to control the dragon, the unicorn returned to the clouds and the people suddenly experienced what is was like to manage pure power — the power of a dragon’s emotions.

I have a dragon at my house. She's barely three feet tall and loves to wear twirly dresses. But like the dragon in this story (and particularly after a long time of trying to be tame and behave), her big dragon feelings just have to come out.

Have you ever had a two-year-old roar at you? I mean, literally, scream, “ROAR!”

I don't know where she learned it even, but my baby dragon will often express her feelings — anger, frustration, exhaustion — just like that. It's adorable sometimes, and maddening others. More than anything, though, it always seems like such a healthy way to vent. After all, if we threw manners and expected adult behaviors out the window, who among us wouldn't benefit from a good “ROAR” every now and then?

Whether your kiddo roars instinctively or needs some encouragement, this craft is a fun way to talk about letting those dragon roars out — and all the big feelings that come with them.

This dragon megaphone takes just a few minutes to put together with materials you probably already have. Make one up and keep it on hand for the next time someone in your house really needs to let out a good ROAR!

This is a perfect craft or activity to help little ones explore the themes and lessons of this dragon-filled time of year — Michaelmas!

Then, cut 3-4 small triangles out of construction paper, and fold them over about ¼ inch at the bottom to make a flap for attaching them to the cup.

Use tape or glue to attach the triangles in a line along the outside of the cup to make the dragon's spines.

Next, cut two small rectangles out of the construction paper. Glue or tape a googly eye to the top of each one, then fold the bottom to make a flap.

Use the flap to glue or tape the eyes to the cup, one on each side of the spines.

Last, cut several lengths of ribbon or skinny fabric scraps to about 6 inches long.

Reaching through the hole you cut in the bottom of the cup, glue or tape the ends of the fabric and ribbons inside the cup to create the dragon's fire.
