Storybox Playlist: Stories for the Festival of Lights
December 19, 2016
This is the season of darkness and light. Darkness due to the short days and long nights - but it is also the season of light because of the gifts we bring each other, the candles we light in our homes and the miraculous promise of the returning sun.

Festival of Lights (from the Martin & Sylvia Series)
Martin and Sylvia’s town center holds many festive events throughout the year. During December, there are several town traditions, including a “Festival of Lights,” where the shopkeepers decorate their storefronts in lights. When Martin learns that Hanukkah is also called the Festival of Lights, he begins to discover the similarities between all the festivals and holidays that take place during this time of year. And he and Sylvia are inspired to create a festival of their very own.
Candleberry Elf (from the So Many Fairies Series)
Every year, during the long nights of December, the Candleberry elf makes candles in his fairy chandlery. Every year he waits for the old man and woman of the farmhouse to light their candles, signaling the beginning of the festival of lights. One year, however, they do not light their candles — and the Candleberry elf looks to find out why.
A Night for Stories (from the Martin & Sylvia: More Adventures! Series)
One late afternoon, when Martin expresses his frustration about how the days get so short this time of year, Daddy tells brother and sister about how it is considered the storytelling time of year. He suggests that they spend the evening together telling stories and everyone gets excited. He says that stories almost always bring magic, but that evening the magic surprises even Daddy.
Light in the Wilderness ( from the So Many Fairies Series)
Star is a house-cat with a wild side. And one day — in the middle of a snow storm - Star’s wildness gets him lost in the forest. Luckily, a dedicated fairy who loves Star, engages the natural world to help him find his way back home.
The Middle of the Night (from the By Thistle By Thimble Series)
Willow Fielding loves to camp - but she hasn't always loved it. She was once afraid of the woods and then, when she was 8 years old, her grandfather introduced her to a barred owl named Lucy. "Like the girl in the stories who brought light during dark times" said her grandfather. After that point the woods became a magical place for her - and years later, when she was caught in a storm, that magic returned and brought a special light to a very dark night.
